Stage 2

Designing a Building to meet a Growing University’s Needs for Active Learning
Eilis Hennessy, UCD & Niamh Burke, RKD

In 2017 University College Dublin identified the need to expand the quantum of classrooms and learning spaces on campus to meet the needs of a growing student population. In line with the University’s education strategy, the proposed building was designed with active learning as its core objective, incorporating the kinds of formal and informal spaces that students need in order to acquire and practice the wide range of skills that  they need to thrive in the 21st Century. These skills demand more spaces where students can work collaboratively with their peers or independently with a book or on a laptop. Classrooms in the building had to provide a technology enabled learning environment with furniture that could easily be moved to facilitate group activities and engagement with lecturers. Uniquely for the campus the building would not be assigned to any college or discipline and instead would meet the needs of students from every school and discipline. This requirement set up unique challenges and opportunities.
