Biography

Edel Tobin graduated from UCD in 2002, and subsequently joined the practice of Heneghan Peng Architects. During her time at Heneghan Peng Architects, Edel worked on a number of major design competitions, including the Grand Egyptian Museum which the practice won, yielding them a notable commission for the design of the world’s largest archaeological museum. After working number of years on other award-winning designs such as Aras Chill Dara, Edel took up a position in Simon J Kelly Architects. In 2013, Edel was appointed as a director. Simon J Kelly Architects have been designing and delivering award winning schools since the late 1950’s. Most recently winning a number of RIAI Awards for Oughterard National School, Scoil Phadraig School Westport and Scoil Mhuire Monivea. The practice maintains a significant focus and interest in school design and continues to research and explore how considered design can deliver higher quality learning environments supporting pedagogy across primary, secondary and special education schools. Edel lead the team in the delivery of NDFA DSBP Bundle 2, and currently is overseeing the Simon J Kelly Architects team’s involvement in the NDFA’s DSBP2 Project Nore School Bundle.

Edel has lectured in Architecture and Planning at the National University of Ireland, Galway, as well as regularly undertaking an external examiner role on the Architecture Technology Degree course at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.
