Biography

Professor Andrew J Deeks has been the President of University College Dublin, Ireland’s largest and most globally engaged university, since January 2014. He is responsible for the University’s overall direction, in consultation with the Governing Authority, and, in accordance with the Universities Act, manages and directs the University in its academic, administrative, financial, personnel and other activities. From 2015-2020, following a strategy developed under his leadership in 2014, the University made significant progress, enhancing student satisfaction; increasing the quality, quantity and impact of its research; and building engagement locally, nationally and internationally. In December 2019 UCD launched an ambitious new strategy for the period 2020-2024 entitled ‘Rising to the Future’, which provides a roadmap for further increasing the size and performance of the University. Professor Deeks is highly respected for his research in structural mechanics, structural dynamics and dynamic soil structure interaction. His strong commitment to students is acknowledged in the awards he holds for teaching excellence and innovation. Prior to his role at UCD, he was a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Durham University, where he led the Science, Engineering and Technology division of the University and contributed to the development of extensive international and industry partnerships. He is a member of the Executive Committee the Universitas 21 university network, a member of the Administrative Board of the International Association of Universities and a Council member of both the European Universities Association and the Irish Universities Association. He is a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineers Ireland and the Institution of Engineers Australia.
