Modular Matters – Discover the Potential of your Learning Space

One of the biggest challenges for schools and colleges is delivering improvements to their estate without disrupting students and their learning. With modular solutions, entire buildings can be constructed with minimal impact and on an incredibly tight programme. This presentation will showcase the capability of modular component design and speed of response using high profile case studies and real-time learnings from projects.

Why MMC? Why Not?

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) includes many emerging systems and technologies, and whilst they may not be a panacea for the multifarious shortcomings in the construction industry, the opportunities to reduce programme and disruption, improve Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ), and address skills shortages, whilst balancing cost and performance, must not be underestimated.

By drawing on some of the education and cross-sector experience, skills and knowledge that HLM and their Head of MMC Delivery have built-up over the last twenty or so years, this presentation will seek to respond to some of the questions about Why, When and How to adopt a DfMA approach and embed MMC into education projects.

HLM will outline how offsite design expertise can combine with sustainability ambitions to utilise various MMC categories within projects to work towards achieving sustainable outcomes in a creative way. They will highlight that the status-quo for procurement of designers and physical buildings needs to evolve to maximise the benefits MMC can bring and will demonstrate how adopting digital solutions across all project work stages can facilitate collaboration and great design and delivery of MMC.

As well as providing insight from HLM, questions will be posed about the direction of future evolution of MMC, how integration of its benefits can develop, what concerns remain to be addressed and how that might happen.
